Downtown Castle Rock

Castle Rock sits twenty minutes south of Centennial Airport, and its downtown is the rare Front Range main street that never got bulldozed for a strip mall. Wilcox and Perry Streets still carry brick storefronts from the 1880s, now filled with chef-run restaurants, taprooms pouring their own beer, and shops that are not chains. Above it all stands the butte the town is named for, with a trail to the top and a star that lights every holiday season.

This section covers downtown proper and the parks that frame it. Everything here is walkable from the same few blocks: park once on Wilcox, eat, drink, browse, and finish with the climb up Rock Park or a concert in Festival Park. For anyone flying into KAPA, it is the closest thing the south metro has to a genuine small-town evening, and it is a straight twenty-mile shot down I-25.

The two anchors are worth knowing before you go. Festival Park runs the summer concert series and the winter ice rink along Sellars Gulch, a block off Wilcox, with a splash pad that keeps families there for hours. Rock Park holds the trail up the butte itself, about 200 vertical feet of climbing to a view that takes in the whole Palmer Divide, and the local ritual of running its stairs before breakfast. Both are free, both are five minutes from the restaurants, and together they explain why downtown Castle Rock is busier on a Saturday than towns three times its size.
